Extended biography
David Herman was born in 1984 in Budapest. He is the son of a French/Hungarian father and a Hungarian mother. Since the age of five David lives in the Netherlands.
Education
David started to play the piano at the age of 10. In 2001 David was admitted to the Conservatory of Amsterdam (CvA) where he studied for eight years: two preparatory years, four years of Bachelor’s and two years of Master's. He studied with Marjes Benoist for the first three years, followed by David Kuyken for the remaining five. In May 2007 David graduated for his Bachelor’s degree with a 9+ (on a scale of 10) and, in June 2009, received his Master’s degree with a 9 cum laude. In September 2009 David entered the famous 'Ferenc Liszt music academy' in Budapest, to follow a one year study with Balázs Szokolay and Gábor Eckhardt. Here he could partially specialize more on Hungarian composers like Bartók and Kodály. During his Master’s studies, David also studied at the musicology department on the University of Amsterdam. In 2012 David obtained a Master's degree in Culture Management at the University of Antwerp.
Master classes and courses
David received lessons from Marcel Baudet (2003), Willem Brons (2006), Folker Banfield (2006), Jan Wijn (2007), Naum Grubert (2008) and Hakon Austbo (2009). David took part in a series of Masterclasses by Vladimir Tropp (November 2008) held on the CvA.
David participated in different music courses, among which the chamber music course “Feistritz” (Austria, in 2004, 2005 and 2007), the piano solo course “Musica d'Estate” (Italy, 2006), the course held by the “Internationale Stichting Masterclass Apeldoorn” (the Netherlands, 2006) and the “Internationale Kamermuziekfestival Schiermonnikoog” (the Netherlands, 2008). Here he received piano master classes from Brenno Ambrosinni, Franco Scala, Laura Richaud, Noam Greenberg, Pascal Devoyon, and Jacques Rouvier. In 2013 David participated in the Aurora Chamber Music Festival (Sweden). During the festival, he received master classes from Matti Reakallio.
David also received chamber music master classes from Colin Carr (cello), Philippe Graffin (violin), Ákos Pásztor (cello), Gerhard Schulz (violin) and the Parkanyi Quartet. In 2011 David received master classes from Udo Reinemann (bariton), specialized on lied accompaniment.
Concerts
David played in the large concert hall of the “Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ” in Amsterdam (YPF, 2007, 2011), the small hall of the “Oosterpoort” in (Groningen, 2008), the “Nieuwe kerk” (The Hague, 2004). David regularly plays in smaller scale concert halls throughout the Netherlands, solo or as part of an ensemble. David also played several times concerts in small halls in Hungary, for example the “Spinoza Ház” in Budapest.
David performed the Pierrot Lunaire by A. Schönberg with the New European Ensemble (NEE) during the during the Schönberg festival in The Hague. In 2011 David was the soloist of Klaas de Vries’ piano concerto. The performance was held at the “Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ” in Amsterdam.
David gave successful concerts with his horn trio ensemble. With this ensemble he played concert programs including the horn trio of J.Brahms (op.40), in several concert halls throughout The Netherlands, among them “theater de Vest” (2008) and “de ruïnekerk” (2006).
